Where SE Ranking wins on numbers
Tracked keywords is the widest gap. Core gives 2,000 a day against 500 on the Semrush entry plan, so four times the capacity for 12 percent less money. You have to climb to Semrush Advanced at $455.67 a month before you match SE Ranking Growth's 5,000, and Growth is $223.20.
Projects follow the same shape: 10 against 5 at entry, 30 against 15 one tier up.
Seats are where it compounds. SE Ranking charges from $16 a month for an additional user against Semrush's $45. A four-person team on monthly billing runs $177 on SE Ranking Core against $274.95 on the Semrush entry plan, roughly 36 percent less. Growth includes three seats before you pay for any.
The API difference is the sharpest single point
SE Ranking includes 25,000 API credits a month on Core at $103.20. Semrush does not offer API access until Advanced at $455.67 a month. That is 4.4 times the price for the entry point to programmatic data.
If you pull data into a dashboard, a client report or anything automated, that difference decides the comparison on its own. SE Ranking also sells extra API capacity at $45 a month for 3 million credits, and a standalone API plan from $179 a month, so the ceiling is higher too. One limit worth knowing: the Backlink API specifically is a Growth feature, not a Core one.
Where Semrush earns the difference
Breadth, and it is a real difference rather than a marketing one. Semrush runs content marketing tools, PPC and advertising research, and market research alongside the SEO toolkit. SE Ranking is an SEO platform. If your work spans paid and organic, or you produce content briefs from the same login you check rankings in, Semrush covers ground SE Ranking does not.
Semrush also has a permanent free plan, capped at one project and ten reports a day. SE Ranking has no free tier at all, only the 14-day trial. For anyone who wants to keep a login open between projects without paying, that matters.
The last one is less measurable but real. Semrush is the more recognised name, and in client work a report carrying a familiar logo sometimes travels further than a better number does.
What catches people out on each
SE Ranking counts your keyword allowance per combination of keyword and target, where a target is a search engine plus a country or region plus a language. Track a term on Google and Bing and that is two. Track it across two cities and that is two. So 2,000 is smaller than it looks for local or multi-engine work, and you should do the arithmetic on your actual setup before assuming the ratio above holds for you. There are also no refunds, only the trial, and full AI search tracking across ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Mode is a $71.20 a month add-on rather than part of the plan.
Semrush catches people through tier drift. Historical data starts at Pro+, the API starts at Advanced, and tracked keywords step from 500 to 1,500 to 5,000. The plan you need is usually one above the plan you first reach for, which is how a $139.95 tool becomes a $299 one.
Which one to buy
Buy SE Ranking if rank tracking at volume is the job, you have more than one person on the account, or you need API access without paying $455.67 a month for it. That covers most agencies and most in-house teams doing SEO specifically. Our SE Ranking review goes deeper on the limits.
Buy Semrush if your work runs across content, paid search and organic together, or if you want a free login to keep open between projects. Our Semrush review makes that case in full.
If both look like more platform than you need, our Semrush alternatives guide covers the cheaper end, the Semrush vs Mangools comparison sets the entry plan against a genuinely budget bundle, and our ranked guide to the best SEO tools puts all of them in order.
